Chris Cornell’s 2009 performance at the Pinkpop Festival captures a unique and somewhat divisive transitional period in his career. Touring in support of his experimental, R&B-influenced solo album Scream, the show presented a fascinating clash of styles on a massive festival stage.

Cornell is in fine vocal form, his legendary range cutting through the open air. The setlist, however, is a jarring juxtaposition. He performs newer, electronic-tinged tracks like “Scream,” “Part of Me,” and “Ground Zero” with conviction, showcasing his willingness to take artistic risks. Yet, the energy in the crowd palpably shifts when he leans into his iconic rock catalogue.

The performance truly ignites during the classics. Audioslave’s “Show Me How To Live” and “Cochise,” alongside Soundgarden giants like “Spoonman” and the essential closer “Black Hole Sun,” remind the audience of his unparalleled status as a grunge icon. A soulful rendition of Temple of the Dog’s “Hunger Strike” and a powerful cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times Bad Times” further highlight his versatile vocal command.

While the stylistic whiplash between the slick production of his 2009 solo material and the raw power of his past hits can feel disjointed, this concert remains a compelling document of one of rock’s greatest voices refusing to stand still.
